After two years of research and negotiations, two St. Charles County not-for-profits formally merged last week. Community Living Inc. and Family Support Services both serve the developmentally disabled, CLI's services and programs before the merger were focused on adults while FFS specifically geared its programs to young people ages 12 to 21.

LEWISTON -- In celebration of a new congregate living facility for adults with developmental disabilities, Community Partners Inc. (CPI) held a groundbreaking ceremony recently.
As a nonprofit organization, CPI provides housing and support services to adults with developmental disabilities in southern and central Maine. On the site adjacent to CPI's12-bed nursing home on Old Lisbon Road, the new five-person home will have professional oversight. CPI rents and staffs three homes in Lewiston.

CHESAPEAKE - Karen Kay Kimmons, 52, of the 1300 block of Kay Ave., passed away May 28, 2010. Karen was predeceased by her parents, Victor H. and Mary J. Kimmons; and a brother, Patrick C. Kimmons. Kenneth Kimmons of Chesapeake and William Kimmons of Round Lake Beach, Ill., are Karen's surviving brothers. Vickie Kimmons of Chesapeake, Karen's sister, also survives her.
Karen was a 1979 graduate of Kirk-Cone Rehabilitation Center. The Chesapeake Community Services Board provided day support and prevocational training. Karen worked for Chesapeake Service Systems Inc. Employment sites included the Chesapeake Vocational Center, Hilti Corporation, and Mitsubishi Chemical America. Karen retired in 2000 due to poor health.

AS the legislature and Gov. M. Jodi Rell continue to debate the merits of her budget proposal, one area that has received little attention is the effects this budget plan will have on community providers. Connecticut state government relies on the nonprofit community provider network to deliver good quality social services and health care programs that serve nearly 500,000 residents. These men, women and children have a variety of special needs, such as developmental disabilities, mental illness and substance dependency.
