TO THE EDITORS:
The past few days have been traumatic for many people and without our community services volunteers it could have been much worse. A huge thank you to all the volunteers of Lancaster County. Many of these volunteers went 48 hours or more without sleep or a decent meal. Some took vacation days or time off without pay from their jobs to help a community in need.

The growth rate for college students is more than double that for all volunteers.

Northern Shores Elementary School recently celebrated American Education Week with the new superintendent of Suffolk Public Schools, Deran Whitney, who made time to read to Danielle Hare's Early Start class and Traci Ford's first-grade class. The students in both classes enjoyed the story "Doctor De Soto" by William Steig, who also wrote the acclaimed "Shrek." Over at Creekside Elementary, numerous volunteers made a point of offering their services for the Community Reading Day . I caught Carolyn Harris sharing her talents in the Grand Theater with the second-graders and Beth Lyon-Suhring with a special-education class.
