It's Rodriguez's second week at her first job. The 17-year-old is a recreational aide and tutor for local nonprofit agency Mercy Housing at its Kennedy Estates complex in Sacramento. Cheers: To Community Mediation Services, a group that solves neighborhood disputes. Formerly a service of the City of Vancouver, it was spun off as a nonprofit organization last year as the city looked to shed costs. Now relocated to leased space furnished with City Hall castoffs, the mediation is mostly handled by a corps of trained volunteers, rather than employees. The city still kicks in a little funding, and the county contributes a fraction of the filings fee from small-claims court. It hasnt been easy, but the core service remains intact. Lutheran Social Services of Mid-America is now known as Graceworks Lutheran Services. The nonprofit corporation, based in the Miami Valley, provides a variety of residential and community-based services, including Bethany Lutheran Village in Centerville and Consumer Credit Counseling Service.

A 12-hour mental health first-aid training course will be held 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays, Jan. 17 and 24, in the Blair Room of the Community Services Center, 630 Janet Ave. Co-sponsored by Mental Health America of Lancaster County and Community Services Group, the training will teach people how to assist someone going through a mental health crisis, until professional help arrives.

The Shelby County Commission voted 9-4 Monday in favor of giving a contract to local nonprofit group Christ Community Health Services to provide family-planning services for poor people. The vote was a setback for Planned Parenthood Greater Memphis Region , which currently has a temporary county contract and protested the proposed switch to Christ Community.
