CENTERVILLE -- Municipal volunteers were recognized and the Mayor's Award for Community Service bestowed at Centerville's Volunteer Salute on May 19 at The Golf Club at Yankee Trace. Jim Brunner, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to Centerville, was presented with the Mayor's Award by Deputy Mayor Doug Cline.
What was quickly becoming an eyesore on The Baddour Center's campus is now a beautifully primed and painted press box behind home plate at Baddour's softball field, all thanks to Travis Chisholm of Boy Scout Troop #235 and others who assisted him in accomplishing his final project to become an Eagle Scout. This task wasn't Chisholm's first time to volunteer at Baddour. He helped John Norris in March 2010 create a walking path for residents.
COLONIAL HEIGHTS - It may be true that many hands make light work, but the hundreds of volunteers who showed up for a local church's community-service project yesterday weren't looking for an easy job. More than 700 people showed up Saturday to help with Colonial Heights Baptist Church's 2010 "Chrestos" service project, which sent teams of volunteers out to spruce up the landscaping at 19 schools across the Tri-Cities region.
BLOOMINGTON - The frigid weather had a ripple effect on food delivery and doctor visits for the homebound, disabled and elderly as service providers reluctantly pulled their volunteers off the road for their safety. About 500 people in McLean, Livingston, and DeWitt counties didn't get their Peace Meals on Thursday, and the majority didn't get any on Wednesday either. Faith in Action and PATH also had fewer services because of the weather.
Hundreds of Inland Empire entrepreneurs, volunteers, service professionals and community activists will show their gratitude to military men and women with more than flag waving and hand shaking on Saturday. Ten soldiers who've recently returned from or will soon be deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan will be feted to completely free weddings and honeymoons as part of Operation Community Cupid, a massive effort that began 10 weeks ago.
PHILLIPS -- A free community meal planned for Martin Luther King Day is the service project for which two local groups received a Maine Commission for Community Service award. Sandy River Land Trust and High Peaks Alliance were one of 16 schools and organizations awarded $450 to develop a community volunteer service project in celebration of Martin Luther King Day, said Betsy Squibb.
On April 30, the Duarte Community Service Council hosted the Harlem Ambassadors professional show basketball team for a night of high-flying slam dunks, hilarious comedy and feel-good family entertainment. The Harlem Ambassadors would like to extend a special thank you to event organizers Frank Haynes and Dorothy Smith. The Duarte Route 66ers proved to be an energetic and enthusiastic challenging team and we thank all of the players for their good sportsmanship. The event would not have been possible without the support and generosity of local community sponsors, the Duarte Community Service Council and event volunteers.
