HARRISBURG, Pa., Sept. 22 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- More than 2,200 community service opportunities for Pennsylvanians will be available through $9.9 million in federal AmeriCorps grants, Department of Labor & Industry Secretary Vito said today. The funds are distributed through PennSERVE: the Governor's Office of Citizen Service.
These opportunities will provide our citizens with the opportunity to learn new skills and enable them to make their neighborhoods better places to live," Vito said. "Citizen service is a great way to participate in something of which you can be proud. It's also one of the best ways to make a difference in your community - making it a better place to live, work and play.

PennSERVE: The Governor's Office of Citizen Service will distribute more than $5.3 million in funding with seven state grants which will create more than 1,700 positions in Pennsylvania. More than $3.9 million in five national grants will be awarded to multi- state programs operating in Pennsylvania, with the support of PennSERVE, creating up to 480 additional AmeriCorps positions.

Each week Open Arms provides a dinner for those families that St. John's Open Arms' grief support groups, located at 5780 Evergreen. Nurturing individuals are needed to come in at 5:30 to set up and serve meals. Volunteers would also interact with families, welcoming them and helping them feel comfortable. This opportunity is on Monday evenings at the location through June 2008. Initial training is provided on site. Volunteers can serve alone or together, as a family or small church group. Eighteen grants totaling $10,227,200 will be awarded to support 2,007 AmeriCorps positions throughout Pennsylvania. The grants will support community organizations that sponsor national service programs addressing unmet needs in education, economic opportunity, health and wellness, disaster preparedness, and veterans and military families.
