  • The Employment and Training Administration (ETA) of the Department of Labor (Department) issues this final rule to implement an additional indicator for volunteer work in the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP). Specifically, this rule amends our regulations regarding Performance Accountability for title V of the Older Americans Act (OAA) and corresponding definitions.   • A day for community service I'm writing in response to the Sept. 10 letter from Lee Williams regarding his concern for the date of the Southeastern Colorado Race for the Cure. I thank Williams for sharing his perspective. Our race has been held on the Sunday following Labor Day for 15 years. It is a tradition for our community and as such we felt it was important to continue this tradition for the thousands of community members who find this event an integral part of their lives. Families plan vacations around this date and guests come from all over the country to attend our race.

  • The current study sought to determine if community based gardening projects would reduce perceptions of the need to use communication devices-cell phones or text messaging-and increase the likelihood of participating in future volunteer projects. Results strongly support the predictions in that the experimental group post-test mean score of the need and importance of community service work was significantly higher (46.33) than the control group (15.33), t (8) = -32.88, p < .001. Additionally, the post-data suggests that the experimental group's mean score of perceived needs for electronic devices (i.e., cell phones, MP3 players, and headset radios) and technology (14.33) was significantly lower than the control group's mean score (34.00), t (8) = 5.73, p < .05.
