• Safe Voices Honors Community Partners

FARMINGTON -- On Oct. 20 Safe Voices held its annual meeting to celebrate a year of accomplishments and recognize the work of community partners throughout Androscoggin, Oxford and Franklin Counties. This year three community members and organizations were honored as Community Heroes. Jerry Cayer, executive vice president of Franklin Community Health Network, responded to the 2011 domestic violence homicides with No Excuses: A Call to Men, an initiative to engage men against domestic violence in Franklin County. He was also instrumental in offering ownership of the Farmington office building to Safe Voices free of cost.

It's not surprising that innovative singer-songwriter Chaka Khan is helping the Pittsburgh Symphony raise money for local nonprofits. Khan, who has won eight Grammys so far in a very successful career, set up her own foundation to aid women and children. Khan headlines the Pittsburgh Symphony's annual Community Partners Concert led by resident conductor Lawrence Loh on Thursday at Heinz Hall. Community Partners allocates funds from ticket proceeds to the nonprofits chosen by ticket buyers. It has generated more than $380,000 for Western Pennsylvania nonprofits since it began in 2004.

• Learning to Communicate with Compassion ; Community Partners Sponsors a Workshop On How to Communicate with Others in a Positive Way.

Finding effective ways to communicate is the goal of Community Partners of Biddeford, a nonprofit agency that works with people with developmental disabilities and their support partners. The agency recently sponsored a nonviolent communication training session intended to help individuals express themselves while considering the needs of others. The four-day workshop, hosted by the University of New England at Biddeford, was attended by 200 participants. The event featured 15 themed workshops detailing various aspects of the nonviolence training that also is called compassionate communication.

The event brought together more than 70 community partners, USM LAC faculty, staff and students.
