  • Psychiatric centers had an important role in the development of our community, beginning at the turn of the 19th century. In 1885, Kings Park Psychiatric Center was built, alleviating much of the overcrowding of city hospitals. Shortly after, the Central Islip Psychiatric Center was built; finally, in 1931, the Pilgrim State Psychiatric Center opened, becoming the world's largest hospital of its kind. Together, the three facilities were home to hundreds of thousands of Long Island patients, until they started downsizing in the 1970s and 80s due to costs and the discovery of new medications.
