Psychiatric centers had an important role in the development of our community, beginning at the turn of the 19th century. In 1885, Kings Park Psychiatric Center was built, alleviating much of the overcrowding of city hospitals. Shortly after, the Central Islip Psychiatric Center was built; finally, in 1931, the Pilgrim State Psychiatric Center opened, becoming the world's largest hospital of its kind. Together, the three facilities were home to hundreds of thousands of Long Island patients, until they started downsizing in the 1970s and 80s due to costs and the discovery of new medications.
In accordance with Section 102(a)(4)(C) of the Department of Housing and Urban Development Reform Act of 1989, this announcement notifies the public of past funding decisions made by the Department in a competition for funding under the FY2010 Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA) for the Homeless Assistance Grants program. This announcement contains the names of the awardees and the amounts of the awards made available by HUD in 2010. A Federal Register notice on this action was not published at the time; however, the public was advised of these grant selections since they were posted on HUD's Web site. Out-of-class involvement provides students with opportunities for rich social lives which, according to Cheng (2004), are closely associated with sense of campus community. Based on Astin's (1984) Theory of Involvement, and Boyer's (1990) principles of community, the purpose of this study was to examine how involvement in out-of-class activities influences students' perceived sense of campus community. Three hundred and thirty respondents completed an on-line questionnaire which consisted of demographics and questions related to their out-of-class involvement in 14 areas as identified by the institutions' Dean of Students Office, and a 25-item sense of community scale developed by Cheng (2004).
