  • The way organizers from Boonville Middle School see it, the Fitness is Fun 5K is a way to encourage exercise not just for one day, but all year round. The race, planned for May 21, will take runners and walkers through parts of Boonville, beginning and ending at the middle school. And the proceeds from the event will help fund healthy initiatives at the school and at the Studio Bee community center.

  • Three Columbia social service agencies will learn Friday whether they will receive state help next year when the Missouri Housing Development Commission considers applications for help from the state Housing Trust Fund. Because of the continuing contraction in the housing market, the fund has only $3.7 million available to meet the needs expressed in $16 million worth of applications statewide. That's the lowest figure in the trust fund's history, said Heather Bradley-Geary, Trust Fund and Community Initiatives manager for the commission.

  • Big gift to Paul's Place The board of directors of Paul's Place Inc., a community services center serving 6,000 low-income residents of the Washington Village/ Pigtown neighborhood of West Baltimore, announced their acceptance of a $2.85 million gift from Open Gates Inc., a Baltimore-based nonprofit health care organization. The donation includes the building and grounds of the Open Gates Health Center, a 15,000- square-foot facility at 1111 Washington Blvd. in Baltimore, and a $250,000 grant for operations. Paul's Place plans to use the funds to institute a capital reserve for the building and create a Health and Wellness Fund supporting future community health initiatives.
