The Skillman Foundation has named Carol A. Goss as its new president and chief executive officer. The announcement was made by The Skillman Foundation's board chair, Dr. Lillian Bauder. Goss was chosen after an extensive search for a new president that began in March 2004. Goss served as vice president of programs at The Skillman Foundation since May 2002. Prior to that, she was a senior program officer. In her new role as president, she will oversee all foundation operations, work directly with the board of trustees to strategically develop and manage the foundation's grant-making initiatives, and collaborate with community partners to improve outcomes for children and youth in Metropolitan Detroit.

HINSDALE, Ill., Dec. 15 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The Illinois Children's Healthcare Foundation (ILCHF) today announced it has awarded 45 grants totaling $5,944,092 for programs designed to increase the access Illinois children have to specific health services. About $3.5 million of that total will go towards new initiatives. This round of grants marks the second year of funding since ILCHF was established in late 2002. New funding went to applicants in two categories: establishing or expanding oral or mental health services provided to children through school-based health centers, and establishing or expanding oral, mental or general pediatric services provided to children at community-based health centers. The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) will be issuing a non-competitive one-year extension with funds for the National Healthy Tomorrows Technical Assistance Resource Center at the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). Up to $176,855 will be awarded over a one-year extended project period. In the mostly female dominated profession of teaching, this pilot project investigates how a group of males who are both fathers and teachers perceive their experiences as they navigate these dual roles. This qualitative study invited men who were teaching in early childhood, primary and secondary settings in New Zealand, and who were also fathers, to comment on their perceptions of how their dual roles impacted on each other. The themes emerging from their responses included empathy for parents, better understanding of children, benefits for own children, and being viewed as "more real" by their students, as well as being better equipped to understand schools and learning, improved personal and professional qualities, and more time available to spend with family.
