National program awards grants of $1 million in two years
NEW YORK, Dec. 20, 2010 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- MetLife Foundation today announced that it is awarding $500,000 among 12 nonprofit community development groups in Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City and the San Francisco Bay Area as part of its 2010 Community Development Initiative. The organizations are being recognized for leadership and excellence in implementing affordable housing and economic development activities that increase access and opportunity in diverse lower-income neighborhoods. The groups received grants of up to $50,000 each. Since 2009, MetLife Foundation has awarded $1 million through the Community Development Initiative.

FARMINGTON -- Franklin Savings Bank's Community Development Foundation has awarded $33,000 college scholarships to 12 local students. The scholarships are $3,000 each, although one school, Madison, opted to split the amount between two students. The 2011 Franklin Scholars are as follows.
Mt. Blue High School: Michaela M. Yeaton, of Farmington, daughter of Delana Yeaton and the late Steven Yeaton, plans to major in business economics at the University of Maine at Farmington; Bethany Frazier, of Industry, daughter of Clifford Frazier and Linda Wyman, plans to major in business at St. Joseph's College.

The Community Development Corporation of Long Island accepted a $60,000 check from the Citi Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Citibank that gives out money for economic growth.
The Community Development Corporation accepted the grant, which will go toward their foreclosure prevention program, on Monday at their 40th anniversary celebration.

Pat Potts believes we all have the responsibility to leave the world a little better than we found it. Potts' determination to do her share led to her improving the efficiency of nonprofits statewide through founding and directing the Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits for more than 20 years.
