When you follow the news every day, everything looks like a crisis. Sometimes you have to take a step back to realize how well things are going.
Mark Carey, director of Dakota Community Corrections in Hastings, MN, believes that values play a critical role in community justice. In a keynote address during the American Probation and Parole Assn's 23rd Annual Institute held in Norfolk, VA, on Aug 30-Sep 2, 1998, Carey defined community justice as a community-led, decision-making process for addressing interpersonal conflict based on a problem-solving orientation, decentralization, accountability and consensus. He also cited the role of government in ensuring that community values are consistent with constitutional values such as free speech and right to liberty.
Just seven months ago, a planning committee in Falmouth was talking about borrowing $4 million to help pay for a new town center on the campus of the Plummer-Motz/Lunt School at Middle and Lunt roads. This article brings into focus three emerging problems facing the aging urban population: 1. the struggle that frail elderly and their family caregivers have making a decision about where loved ones can live with self-respect and care in their later years, 2. the growing gap between the cost of housing and the income levels of care providers and cared-for, and 3. the disconnect between existing housing design options and housing design options appropriate to home-based caregiving. Strong representation for political appointments are at stake for the Black community. People are quietly being interviewed, vetted and selected without the community's voices being heard. Selectees, according to the grass root community; are people who appear to 'go along to get along', those who cater to the Puppeteers (those who have the most to gain, not necessarily those who need the most). Because our community is not asked for our input into the decision making process of appointments, we don't know that we should be up in arms and disgusted about the political appointment process. We don't recognize that an exclusion appointment process could squelch any momentum that could be built for a candidate that may be acceptable to the betterment of the Black community.
