It's only Black kids, so it's not important," Bentley said of the board's attitude. "It makes no sense to rent gyms when the district could use those in closed school buildings.
"When I asked why not in the Hill District where if kids don't learn to swim early they never will, I was told "because there isn't a pool,'" [Mark Brentley Sr.] said. "I said that's because you closed the only pool. Why mistreat this community by riding kids past Milliones, which could handle the activity for all the Hill schools."
"We have to step back and admit this plan is flawed," said Brentley. "It is costing millions. It's unfair and it's intentional."

Every morning, he welcomes students to the best middle school in all the land. Accomplishments during his 10-year tenure as principal include extensive building renovations, a comprehensive arts curriculum and a reading program that earned him an award from the West Virginia School Libraries Association. An ardent Elk River native, Mickey Blackwell got a journalism degree from WVU then succumbed to the lure of fat paychecks from Federal Express. Finally, he followed his heart to the classroom. For many years the blacktop track at Patrick Henry High School has been a great resource for the community in the Raleigh Court area and the city. Sitting behind the school, tucked in the woods on three sides, it's not uncommon to find deer grazing there or a turtle wandering around. It is a bit of an urban park, with the Murray Run Greenway paralleling it briefly before winding back into the woods.
More importantly, for years, runners and walkers have exercised there, often with their children walking, biking or roller-blading along. Kids were pushed in strollers and children (including my wife when she was young and our own kids more recently) have learned to ride bikes there. It's been a great place for little ones to learn to love physical activity with their families. Cer...
