• Commentary: Here's a Worthy Project: Protect Private Property

People disagree about the role of government, and often quite passionately. Liberals usually favor activist government trying to solve problems, while conservatives point out that government causes many of those same problems. But liberals and conservatives, along with moderates, overwhelmingly agree that protecting private property is a central duty of government. Outside the Communist Party USA (which apparently still exists), theft generally is not a favored political stance.

• Crime, Violence Goal of Protests?

I had to laugh when I saw Jonathan Clark's letter, "Occupiers stand for freedom and democracy." These kids don't stand for freedom and democracy, they stand for violence and crime. There have been rapes at these rallies. Drug use is astronomical. In Oakland, Calif., they are destroying buildings, starting fires and injuries are going up. They are being supported by Communist Party USA, the American Nazi Party, al-Qaida, Hugo Chavez, Fidel Castro and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. None of this is reported to us.

• The Revolution May Not Be Televised, but It's On Film

Bob Avakian, chairman of the Revolutionary Communist Party, USA, is not a presidential candidate. But if he were, he wouldn't have to scurry to shape a platform since much of it is available in a lengthy talk, "Revolution: Why It's Necessary, Why It's Possible, What It's All About. Avakian charges, after citing the famous remarks of Frederick Douglass during a July 4th address in the 1850s. What Douglass said then about corruption, avarice, hypocrisy and violence that would "disgrace a nation of savages" holds true today, Avakian added.

• Our View: Obama Is Godlike

Evan Thomas, a ranking editor at Newsweek, has become the sad poster child who symbolizes the state of the mainstream liberal press. Thomas, a highly educated and accomplished journalist and lawyer, was heavily influenced by a six-time presidential candidate for the Socialist Party of America. That candidate was his grandfather, Norman Thomas, who had a cozy relationship with the Communist Party USA.

Every giant party needs a sideshow. And there were more than a few in Denver. * Anti-war protests. The biggest one took place Aug. 24 at the steps of the state Capitol building here, where it felt like you entered a time warp -- back to a time when counter-culturalism was, well, hip. • Remembering an; Unknown Hero

If you're looking for a book as a Christmas gift, I suggest an oldie but goodie, and in honor of the fact that it was 20 years ago that this nation quietly honored the subject of the book: a hero, a Cold War spy whose work was so classified that the 1988 ceremony commending him had to be held in secret. The book is John Barron's "Operation Solo: The FBI's Man in the Kremlin" (Regnery, 1996), which concerns the extraordinary, unheralded work of Morris Childs. That work remained so critical that when Childs died in June 1991 the FBI could not disclose his past at his funeral. At best, the FBI official could announce to a shocked synagogue that this man, whom friends and relatives had thought to have been a lifelong communist - and the second most important person in Communist Party USA - ...

• The Communist Who Couldn't

The presentation of its archives by the defunct Communist Party U.S.A. to New York University's library reminded me of the days in the 1940s when party members were more open, especially in the trade unions for example, in their takeover coups in the nascent Congress of Industrial Organizations or CIO. Not everything involving the Communist Party will appear in the archives, especially anecdotal testimonies. One of these came from an ex-communist I will call Ephraim, a onetime assistant editor of a Communist Yiddish daily called Der Freiheit, whom I got to know after he had broken with communism.
