WASHINGTON, Dec. 9, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- Viet Tan, an unsanctioned pro-democracy party with members in Vietnam and around the world, is stepping up advocacy efforts for Vietnamese prisoners of conscience in advance of Human Rights Day.
Members of Viet Tan meet this week with the foreign ministries of Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Holland, Norway, and the United States. The discussions are to focus attention on the Vietnamese communist government's reliance on "rule by law" to criminalize basic rights. Using the penal code as the pretext, Hanoi jails writers and bloggers for anti-state "propaganda" (Article 88) and members of pro-democracy groups for "attempting to overthrow the people's administration" (Article 79).

However, it is hard to fit Asian media systems into the existing theories. This paper re-examines the four press theories and identifies the difficulties in using the theories as a guide to understand media systems in Asia. The purpose of this paper is to raise issues with the applicability of the theories in an Asian media context and explore a new paradigm, which would bring in cultural values from both the East and the West.
