WASHINGTON, Feb. 6, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Today the European Parliament voted to reform the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), a law that manages all European fisheries. Members of the European Parliament overwhelmingly voted (502-137) in favor of a comprehensive reform policy which includes amendments - many of which were drafted by Oceana - that require member states to fish all stocks at sustainable levels by 2015 (thus setting a clear target for rebuilding fish stocks) and to comply with a strong EU wide discard ban and an end to the practice of "discards," throwing dead unwanted fish back into the sea.
Europe's Common Fisheries Policy has enormous impact on the world's oceans. European boats catch more than 6.3 million tonnes of fish caught every year (almost 4.5 percent of the total fi...

The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) publishes its proposed List of Fisheries (LOF) for 2013, as required by the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA). The proposed LOF for 2013 reflects new information on interactions between commercial fisheries and marine mammals. NMFS must classify each commercial fishery on the LOF into one of three categories under the MMPA based upon the level of serious injury and mortality of marine mammals that occurs incidental to each fishery. The classification of a fishery in the LOF determines whether participants in that fishery are subject to certain provisions of the MMPA, such as registration, observer coverage, and take reduction plan (TRP) requirements. The fishery classifications and list of marine mammal stocks incidentally injured or killed...

Global is threatening the oceans and the economies that depend on them. We need strong international rules to end all unsustainable fishing.
The scale and toll of industrial fishing is far less familiar than even the scale and toll of industrial farming. That is one of the purposes of European Fish Week, which ended on Sunday. The event was organized by Ocean2012, a coalition hoping to change the Common Fisheries Policy of the European Union. Change will not come easily. As the coalition points out, Europe is supporting with high quotas and direct subsidies for modernizing the European fishing fleet. And since the European fleets fish globally, the effect is global.
