  • Hoping to create a safer park environment and obtain funding for a resource used by nonresidents, the Tonawanda Common Council narrowly approved a resolution Tuesday to create a new committee to study and improve Niawanda Park. The resolution was sponsored by Councilman Richard Slisz and supported by Councilman William Poole. According to Slisz, about 85 percent of the people who use Niawanda Park are non-city residents, although he admits that figure is not based on any study. Regardless, he wants Erie County to provide funding to support the park -- up to 80 percent of expenses -- while having the city retain control of Niawanda.

  • The Milwaukee Common Council could vote as early as Jan. 19 on the proposed development of a $50 million Marriott Hotel, according to Pat Curley, chief of staff to Mayor Tom Barrett. Monday night, the Milwaukee Historic Preservation Commission conditionally approved plans for the 200-room hotel on East Wisconsin Avenue and North Milwaukee Street that will require the demolition of five buildings in the historic district. A condition requiring a 15-foot setback for the hotel on the Milwaukee Street side of the project was called a deal killer by Evan Zeppos, a spokesman for Jackson Street Management LLC, the developer.
