NEW YORK, July 14, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The World Gold Council today releases its Gold Investment Digest, analysing the current economic and financial drivers of the global gold market. The Q2 2011 report shows that gold outperformed most major assets, including commodities, throughout the quarter. In addition, gold's low average volatility of 13.4% for the quarter is well below its long-term 20-year average of 15.8%. Juan Carlos Artigas, Investment Research Manager at the World Gold Council, commented: "While commodities exhibited heightened levels of volatility and sharp falls in price during the month of May, gold's volatility was modest and its price remained stable.

LONDON (Reuters) - Investors worried about global growth and risky markets pulled out $3.9 billion of net investments in commodities in the second quarter, the biggest global outflow in over six years, Barclays Capital said on Tuesday [July 19]. A shaky growth environment and the ratcheting up of financial market risks has hit returns and reduced investor appetite for commodities recently," a research report by Barcap said. "Recent flow data suggests investors are taking a more flexible approach to their commodity investments.

Study Shows Rainforest Protections Would Net $200 Billion for US Soy, Beef, Timber and Oilseed Producers WASHINGTON, May 26 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Leading U.S. farm and forest products groups today called on Congress and the administration to help end tropical deforestation. The groups cited a new report showing that overseas agriculture and logging operations are expanding production by cutting down the world's rainforests, allowing them to flood the world market with cheap commodities that undercut American goods. The report estimates that ending deforestation will boost revenue for U.S. producers by between $196-$267 billion by 2030 - approximately equivalent to the entire amount projected to be spent by farmers on energy during that time.

Senator Dianne Feinstein is making another run at increasing the regulation of energy derivatives trading. On Feb 13, Feinstein re-introduced legislation aimed at preventing manipulation and fraud in OTC energy markets such as oil, natural gas, coal and electricity. Nine other members of the Senate have co-sponsored the bill. Specifically, the bill would require US energy traders who electronically trade futures in the US to keep records and report large positions carried by their market participants in energy commodities for five years or longer.
