A St. Louis County jury found a St. Louis obstetrician committed malpractice by failing to diagnose a major drug-resistant infection that developed in the breast of a first-time mother. The jury awarded the mother $200,000 in damages. About three weeks after giving birth in January 2007, Lynn Bell developed a swollen, tender area on her right breast and told her doctor, Joseph G. Herrmann, that pus was oozing from the nipple. He prescribed an antibiotic and diagnosed it as a clogged milk duct. The area worsened over the next two weeks, until milk ceased to flow and the breast was red, painful and warm, said Bell's attorney, Todd Hendrickson. Herrmann prescribed a new antibiotic. At Bell's last office visit, Herrmann told her to let the breast milk dry up.
