Members of Maine's congressional delegation are lining up in support of a Penobscot County resident nominated to lead a federal commission focusing on economic development in some of the most rural areas of the northeastern U.S. Sanford "Sandy" Blitz of Hudson is nominated to serve as the Northern Border Regional Commission's first federal co-chairman. The commission, which was established by Congress, is charged with implementing economic development plans in financially depressed areas of Maine, New York, New Hampshire and Vermont.

A $5.25 million federal grant will be used to double the energy efficiency of a laboratory building at the West Virginia Regional Technology Park in South Charleston, the U.S. Department of Commerce and the state's congressional delegation announced. The state Higher Education Policy Commission will match the federal grant with money the commission has on hand to improve the energy efficiency of buildings, said Paul Hill, vice chairman of the park's Board of Directors. Hill also is the state Higher Education Policy Commission's vice chancellor for science and research.
