I've been reading about SIVs structured investment vehicles and heard them described as off-balance-sheet funds. What is an SIV exactly? Are these similar to the financial structures Enron created before its big collapse? In layman's terms, an SIV, or "structured investment vehicle" is nothing more than a vehicle that borrows short and invests long. It is structured via creation of an entity, commonly by a bank, that buys long-term assets and finances them by issuing short-term commercial paper (CP). Money is handled through the issuance of commercial paper. The structures of SIVs can vary depending on the goals of the investments, but they all are based on asset-backed securities (ABS). This means that the money is in mortgages, credit cards, student loans and other similar products.
