Thieves recently stole four commercial lawn mowers worth almost $50,000 from a farm-equipment business in Mount Joy Township. Police believe they were taken by a group of thieves who likely scouted out Messick's Farm Equipment on Merts Drive before swiping the tractors.
The Environmental Protection Agency is planning new emissions standards for lawn equipment that would cut air pollution and save gas. But manufacturers say the rules could increase the risk of fires and lead to higher prices for consumers. The new standards would affect all lawn mowers. Currently, there are 52 million residential and commercial mowers (both the ones you push and the ones you ride) and other large lawn equipment that the EPA estimates are in use nationwide. Such lawn equipment is operated about 3 billion hours a year, the agency says, and a typical push mower emits as much hourly pollution as 11 cars, with a riding mower emitting as much as 34 cars.
Portland could gain more than a dozen manufacturing jobs next year as Eastman Industries moves a recently acquired maker of lawn and garden tractors from Wisconsin to Maine. Eastman makes a line of walk-behind lawn mowers, including the lightweight Hovermower. Last spring, the Portland-based company purchased Wisconsin-based Ingersoll Equipment Co., which specializes in larger lawn tractors, commercial mowers and small backhoes.
