The Chicago meeting marks the end of another year for the Commercial Law League of America (CLLA). As the organization approaches the 2008 CLLA Spring/Chicago meeting, the end of one fiscal year is coming to a close and the start of the next is dawning. Likewise, the end of one CLLA presidency is ending and the next president is to be sworn in. Their recent president, Wanda Borges, has been such a great leader and ambassador for the CLLA. One of the true measures of whether one has been a successful leader is whether one has had influence on a given organization or not. John Maxwell in his book The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership states that the true measure of leadership is influence.

The 116th National Conference meeting was a great success -- mixing education, business and social activities. Annette Waggoner, midwestern chair, put on a great convention and reinforced that the Commercial Law League of America (CLLA) "Means Business". This year, the CLLA will continue to look for new ways to market their membership so that they can continue to build on the League slogan "the CLLA Means Business." They will do this through increasing their presence on the Internet, providing educational opportunities at League meetings and by exhibiting at various trade shows to introduce and reinforce the League brand to the credit industry.

The roots of the Commercial Law League of America (CLLA) were formed in the late 1880s with the rise of big corporations. CLLA has served as a benchmark of quality service and unparalleled professionalism. It's no wonder that its Web site's most popular landing page is the Find a Professional service. CLLA's founders recognize the importance of meeting and keeping in touch with partners in the business and credit community. And it remains a vital part of CLLA's mission. CLLA has set up pages on both Facebook and LinkedIn to better enable members to find one another, share ideas, keep up to date on news and information related to the association and the industry, and build and maintain relationships outside of the traditional meeting environment. In the current political environment, the...

Ernest V. Thomas III just became president of the Commercial Law League of America (CLLA) and this is his first President's Page. Born and raised in Cincinnati, he is the third generation in the firm of Thomas & Thomas. His grandfather started practicing in 1946 and, as far as they can tell, joined the CLLA around 1950. His dad became licensed in 1968, and he became licensed in 1982. Their family firm has always focused on collections and creditors' rights. He made it a point during his acceptance speech on April 18 to highlight the fact that, even in these most challenging of times, the CLLA is thriving because of their members. He said that their strategic plan is the mission of his presidency. By that, he means that for the next year, he may be at the helm, but the strategic plan...

It is hard to believe that almost a year has passed since the author was sworn in as President of the Commercial Law League of America (CLLA). He shares several of the organizational accomplishments. First, they hired Oliver Yandle as their EVP and have a new vision and commitment to the success of the CLLA. Secondly, they have established and furthered several programs designed to increase our membership and enhance business opportunities for membership. Third, the League has been seen as leader in the business community. There are certainly other things that they have accomplished this year, but now it is time to look to the future. In these hard economic times they need to continue to push the value proposition to their current and prospective members.

A speech by David Gamache, Commercial Law League of America (CLLA) president, delivered at the CLLA's Chicago 2008 Conference, is presented. Like all organizations the CLLA has a past, a present and with members' help a prosperous future. The history of the league is one rich in tradition and commitment to the profession. During the last two years CLLA has been signing up new members at near record levels. It has worked hard to market the league and attract new members. There were certainly costs associated with those efforts but what a great payout. The league has a strategic plan and it is moving ahead with the implementation of that plan. Like most organizations, CLLA has limited resources and is not able to go 20 directions at once. Part of the goal of this summer's strategic planni...

The autumn of each year is filled with business conferences of every imaginable size and constituency. The autumn of 2007 was no different. Of particular note is the Commercial Law League of America (CLLA) involvement at the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges each year, and this year was spectacular. Each year, the CLLA hosts a breakfast meeting with an outstanding speaker. It is at this breakfast, each year that the CLLA presents the King Award given for excellence in the field of bankruptcy. This year their recipient was Bankruptcy Judge Alexander Paskay from the Middle District of Florida. December may have been a quiet month for the CLLA in terms of conferences.

Some people join for educational opportunities. Others may join for fellowship and friendship. The leadership of the Commercial Law League Of America (CLLA) understands each of these important rationales and is working hard to enhance each opportunity. However, the author wants to concentrate the focus of this article on two considerable business opportunities currently available and others that are being developed. The first comes from a traditional source. That is the business that is available for the attorneys from Agency members of the League. Agency networking certainly provides an opportunity to compete for additional business for the attorney members but there is a second very important business opportunity that needs to be discussed much more openly and the success stories shar...

The national convention of the Commercial Law League of America (CLLA) has been around almost since the creation of the League. It is a place for lawyers to look for new business and improve their techniques, but it also has another part to it. This is the social part, the one that the spouses and the children of the lawyers and other league members can enjoy as well. Although many parents struggle with the issue of whether or not to bring their children for the simple reason of what will their children do all day, the meetings are set up in child friendly locations. During the last meeting in Toronto, Canada, the author was thrilled to see her friends. It is very common to see these friendships forming among younger kids of CLLA league members.
