  • Now that the holidays have passed and the resolutions are beginning, many parents are eyeing their children's rooms. Finding a new home for gently used toys and books can clear the clutter, make room for new toys and benefit a number of local organizations, including schools. Harold Williams, who lives in Marion, Ark., and works in Memphis, noticed during Thanksgiving weekend that he had to wade into his 8- year-old son's room. "You had to be careful with every step you took or you'd hurt yourself," he said of the sea of toys on John's floor. When Williams noticed that his son was bringing toys out of his room to play with them elsewhere because there was no room to play on his floor, he knew it was time to do something.

  • Historical scholarship on business-environment interactions has largely sidestepped the study of corporate innovations that had both economic and environmental benefits. This issue is examined through late-nineteenth-century initiatives sponsored by the British Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, whose aim was to document and promote the creation of profitable by-products out of polluting industrial waste and emissions. A case is made that the individuals involved in this effort not only anticipated concepts and debates now at the heart of the modern sustainable development literature, but also that their work questions some fundamental premises of this discourse.

  • NEW YORK - Every year, toy makers and sellers hope there will be a runaway hit to help spur excitement around the holidays and boost sales. Toys R Us is betting that 15 toys ranging from a flying, inflatable remote-control fish to tiny collectible monsters will be big hits this season. Making the right picks early is crucial for toy sellers so they have the right mix of toys at the right prices to lure shoppers.
