St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 261 S. 900 East, will present Gabriel Faure's "Requiem" Sunday at 4 p.m. The music will be integrated into a traditional liturgical setting for the Commemoration of All Faithful Departed (All Souls' Day).
Churches of various denominations throughout the world observed both All Saints Day and All Souls Day last week, but the appropriately named All Saints Catholic Church of Lockport is having its own unusual observance this afternoon. All Saints' congregation, which is a merger of four separate parishes, meets in the former St. Patrick Catholic Church building at 76 Church St.

Ah, it's Halloween once again. A few days after this column is published, the little varmints will be pounding on my door demanding candy. And given that the day falls on a Saturday this year, we'll get more of the little darlings than usual I have to say, I am always charmed by the holiday, whatever its colorful background, if only because it brings back many happy memories for me of trick or treat. But Halloween is one of those quirky holidays where the sacred and profane rub unhelpful shoulders with one another. This week finds the odd combination of All Hallows Eve (Oct. 31), All Saints' Day (Nov. 1) and All Souls' Day (Nov. 2).

Once again we come to the holiday of Halloween, one of those holy days, like St. Valentine's Day and St. Patrick's Day, which has rather secularized in recent years. In Catholic liturgical tradition, following the Jewish custom, important festivals begin not at the dawn of the holy day, but the night before at what is now called a "vigil," thus, the eve of All Saints' Day, or All Hallows in archaic English, became Halloween. What used to be the time for special prayers in the evening of Oct. 31, thanking God for his saints, has developed, or devolved, into mobs of cute little ones demanding some candy.

This week has seen one of the days sacred to our friends of Mexican heritage, in the Day or in some communities the Days of the Dead. This is an ancient cultural tradition which goes back to the days of the Meshika, or the Aztecs, and which has been slightly modified by the arrival of Christianity in the 15th and 16th centuries. Customs about the Day of the Dead vary in both Mexico and the Southwest of the United States, but the images of the dancing and laughing human skeletons abound, and often seem frightening to people of northern European ancestry.
