THE PAST 10 years have brought some major changes to health care in New Jersey. None is more profound than the improvements and expansion at the state's largest health care facility, Bergen Regional Medical Center in Paramus. In the past year alone, with the closing of hospitals in every region of New Jersey, including Pascack Valley Hospital right here in Bergen County, people concerned about options for quality health care can take comfort in the knowledge that Bergen Regional has grown not only in the number of patients it serves, but in the array of high quality inpatient and outpatient services it provides.

Working locally is Fisher House, a public private partnership created in 1991 to provide temporary housing for the families of military personnel wounded in the service of their country. Wounded soldiers often require specialized care only available at military installations. Fisher House builds comfort homes near major military and veterans' hospitals in major cities, enabling families to be near their loved ones while they are rehabilitated. Through a program called Operation Hero Miles, which uses donated frequent flier miles, Fisher House has also provided 5000 emergency plane tickets. Since its inception, Fisher House has provided over 2 million days of lodging to military families, saving them $80 million.
