WELLINGTON, New Zealand - Underground combustion that continues to generate dangerous gases was preventing rescuers from entering a New Zealand coal mine Sunday where a powerful blast trapped 29 workers nearly two days ago.
Two men emerged after the explosion Friday, but there has been no word from the 29 others.

[Marin] environmentalist Paul Hawken has so many credits and skills to his name that it's almost impossible to sum him up in a title. To Marinites, Hawken may be best known as the other half of the well-loved gardening store Smith and Hawken, which he co-founded with Dave Smith in 1979. (Before that he co-founded the Erewhon Trading Company, the country's first natural-foods business.) To college students and academics, he is best known for his groundbreaking 1987 book The Ecology of Commerce, which was 14 years ahead of its time in pointing out ways for businesses to save money and the environment by adapting more sustainable practices. Hawken has also written six other books, numerous articles and spoken on issues of sustainability to heads of state, from the king of Sweden to Preside...

Regular inspection and maintenance of all fuel-burning appliances (stoves, furnaces, water heaters, dryers, etc.) should be conducted by a qualified technician. Metal flues and heat exchangers should be inspected for signs of rust or cracking. Follow recommendations in owners' manuals to ensure proper use of all appliances. Gas ranges, ovens, and clothes dryers are not intended to be used to heat the home.
Do not use "outdoor" appliances (such as barbecue grills or construction space heaters) indoors. Garages and workshops are "indoors"; they are enclosed spaces in which combustion gases may accumulate.

PONTIAC, Mich., May 6, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Athletes understand that proper breathing is critical to maintaining peak performance under all conditions and so do Chevrolet powertrain engineers. Getting air in and exhaust gases out of the combustion chamber under all speeds and driving conditions is essential to outstanding drivability and fuel efficiency with low emissions.
Whether powered by four, six or eight cylinders, virtually every current Chevrolet car and truck from the compact Aveo and Cruze to the full-size Suburban SUV features variable valve timing (VVT) on its engine to optimize its breathing," said Sam Winegarden, General Motors executive director of Global Engine Engineering.

NEWARK, N.J., October 13 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The cost of home- heating oil had increased in the Northeast this summer by almost 40 percent from last year. Now the Energy Department says heating oil costs could increase here by another 31 percent because of hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
It's not too late to keep energy costs down this winter however. Now residents of the Greater Atlantic County area can take advantage of a new energy efficiency program and save on monthly energy bills throughout the year. With Home Performance with ENERGY STAR(r), existing homes of any size or style can be improved to reduce energy costs by up to 30 percent. Under the program, Home Performance with ENERGY STAR contractors certified by the Building Performance Institute (BPI) measure the efficiency of a hom...

WD: It's a heating technology from Europe - several hundred years old, but they've just been built here for the last 35 years in North America. In diis firebox, you're burning cordwood really hot and really fast, and you're getting the combustion temperature really high, which makes it a clean burn, a complete combustion. Then there is secondary combustion, so you're superheating gases and keeping them inside. With an armload of wood, you're heating a 2000-square-foot house for 12 hours during the coldest months of the year. It's radiating energy at about 150 degrees average - a fairly gentle heat, but it's pretty powerful.
WD: Sociology. [Laughs.] I've been on a lot of jobsites in Vermont and there's someone with a Master's or PhD on every one. I know a stonemason who's an ex-lawyer; i...
