An American LDS sailor recently lost his life while serving in Afghanistan.
Killed was U.S. Navy Lt. j.g. Francis L. Toner IV of Narragansett, R.I. A convert to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints, Toner died March 27 when an Afghan National Army soldier opened fire on him and other military personnel assigned to Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan at Camp Shaheen, Mazar-E- Sharif, Afghanistan, according to the U.S. Department of Defense.

Since the end of the Cold War, the United States has been increasingly involved in stabilization and reconstruction operations throughout the world.2 In many cases, the government has failed to rapidly and effectively respond when necessary. 3 These failures occurred, in large part, because the U.S. Government was not fully prepared to execute these operations.4 This has resulted in the unnecessary loss of human life, increased damage to civilian infrastructure, and increased overall stabilization and reconstruction costs.5 The U.S. Government's lack of preparedness in this area was most readily apparent after the fall of Baghdad.6 The early stabilization and reconstruction efforts in Iraq were met with sharp public criticism and are largely viewed as the catalyst for change in the U.S....

A Norfolk-based sailor died of pneumonia on Wednesday, days after being hospitalized at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan.
Airman Darren Ethan Tate, 21, of Canyon, Texas, had been assigned to the amphibious assault ship Iwo Jima, according to the Defense Department. He was serving in Afghanistan with the Combined Security Transition Command, working to train Afghan security forces as part of an embedded training team.
