  • Assistant Sports Editor There are no guarantees in pro baseball, whether you are trying to climb the ladder as a player or manager or coach.

  • The Columbus Clippers have spent the last three days giving Buffalo fans a first-hand look at what they've been missing. Yes, the Cleveland Indians are definitely missed as a parent club around Coca-Cola Field. The Clippers stampeded to their third straight win over the Herd Monday night, an 8-2 romp that made the combined score 25-12 over the three games. The Clips are the defending International League and Triple-A champions and have the look of a team that might be collecting more hardware come September.

  • THE NORFOLK TIDES and Columbus Clippers played neck-and-neck in their series finale Sunday afternoon. The game was tied at 5 before the Tides' Mark Worrell gave up a run in the 10th inning, allowing Columbus to hold on for a 6-5 victory. The Clippers' Ezequiel Carrera had the game-winning single which scored Luke Carlin from second. It was the first run by either team since the fourth inning. The Tides came out swinging the bats early, producing a three-run second inning highlighted by a Blake Davis two-run triple. Brendan Harris and John Hester each added RBI doubles in the third and fourth innings, respectively. Extra work again

  • Ryota Igarashi's rising fastball was thrown with so much heat that when Jared Head swung it appeared to be a foul tip because it hit the facemask of home plate umpire Chris Conroy. Instead, it was ruled a passed ball which allowed Chad Huffman to score from third in the eighth inning. That proved to be the winning run in the Buffalo Bisons' 7-6 loss to the Columbus Clippers.

  • Head to play for AAA title Topeka native Jerad Head and the Columbus Clippers play for their second straight Triple-A baseball championship Tuesday against the Omaha Storm Chasers.

  • Triple-A Indianapolis opened its season Thursday night against the Triple-A champion Columbus Clippers with 10 of the Pirates' top 30 prospects, as rated by Baseball America, starting the season with the team. That includes left-hander Rudy Owens, the seventh-best prospect in the system and the minor league pitcher of the year the past two seasons. Owens, 23, spent last year in Double-A Altoona, where he was 12-6 with a 2.46 ERA and helped the team to the Double-A championship.

  • The Buffalo Bisons are checking out of Coca-Cola Field for nine days and, frankly, that's a good thing. The way this depleted team is going, there's not much worth watching. The New York Mets' alleged top minor leaguers -- and how many of them really have much of a future at Citi Field? -- equaled the worst homestand in the ballpark's 24 seasons with another dreary performance against the Columbus Clippers Tuesday night, a 7-3 loss that completed a four-game sweep by the Cleveland affiliate.

  • AFTER AN EARLY PITCHING DUEL, the Columbus Clippers put together a four-run seventh inning on their way to a 5-2 win over the Norfolk Tides on Friday night. Brian Matusz made his Tides debut in a rehab appearance, recording a no-decision. He left the game in the sixth with the Tides up 1-0. Right-hander Pat Egan relieved Matusz and gave up four runs on five hits and took the loss. Norfolk's (16-32) only runs came on a throwing error by Clippers first baseman Wes Hodges in the third and an RBI from John Hester in the seventh. Rehab start No. 3

  • Former Bison David Huff (right) will start for the Columbus Clippers against the Herd tonight in Coca-Cola Field (It's a 7 p.m. game on Time Warner Cable 13). The Bisons (27-38) have lost eight of nine and this is clearly not a good time to be playing the defending Triple-A National Champion Clippers, who have won six straight and own the IL's best record at 42-22 Huff (4-2, 4.37) is the answer to a Buffalo trivia question, as he was the starter and winner in the Herd's last home game as a Cleveland affiliate, a 3-2 triumph over Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Aug. 28, 2008. The Indians, of course, moved to Columbus for the '09 season. Huff and reliever Jensen Lewis are the only players on the Clippers' roster who once played Triple-A ball in Buffalo.
