The departure of key surgeons is threatening Medical College of Georgia Hospital's ability to keep the area's only top-tier trauma center designation, officials said Wednesday. Without that expertise, patients in the Augusta area needing that kind of complex surgery would have to be shipped to the nearest hospital to offer it, which would be either in Columbia or Savannah, Ga.
