Gorge vistas blocked by trees I generally have no disagreement with the July 4 story Columbia River Gorge: Forest Service land purchases heighten areas appeal or the intent of the Gorge Commission and the Gorge National Scenic Area Act to protect the Gorge. However, I do have a suggestion and a recommendation.
KANSAS CITY (AP) -- More than 50 Forest Service firefighters were battling a blaze yesterday in Mark Twain National Forest in south- central Missouri that a forest ranger thinks might have been set intentionally by locals who have a history of using arson in their beefs against absentee landowners. Salem District forest ranger Thom Haines said the fire, which had consumed about 5,000 acres by yesterday afternoon, began as three separate blazes.
Karl Kimbel has always been drawn to the outdoors. From mountain biking, backpacking and kayaking to his six years working as a ranger for the U.S. Forest Service, the 34-year-old Columbia native has spent the better part of his life in the wilderness. But after suffering a series of injuries - and a brush with death - while working as forest ranger in the Sierra Nevada, Kimbel decided to move back to Columbia and focus on his other passion, bicycles. Since opening Klunk Bicycles & Repair in 2005, Kimbel's outdoor adventures have taken a back seat to his business.
WHITE SALMON -- The U.S. Forest Service hopes to announce a decision next summer on a plan for a trail network in the Coyote Wall area of the Columbia River Gorge. The wall is a few miles east of Bingen on the Washington side of the Columbia.
PRINDLE - Last June, Dave Cannard finally prevailed in his eight- year campaign to secure public ownership of Pioneer Point, a promontory above the Columbia River, when the Forest Service bought his 68 acres atop a sheer cliff northeast of Cape Horn for $740,000. But Pioneer Point, with its million-dollar view from 1,200 feet above the river, may be one of the Forest Service's last major land purchases in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area for the foreseeable future.
HOOD RIVER, Ore. A new study documenting highly acidic fog and rain in the eastern Columbia River Gorge proves urgent action is needed to reduce the sources of gorge air pollution, lawyers for two environmental groups told the Columbia River Gorge Commission Tuesday. The Forest Service study "should be a wake-up call," said Brent Foster, attorney for Columbia Riverkeeper. "This commission and everyone in this room needs to radically readjust ... to act in a way that is appropriate to the threat.
COLUMBIA HILLS STATE PARK - Forest Service archaeologist James D. Keyser clambers up a basalt cliff to a ledge rubbed smooth over thousands of years by the backsides of visitors to this Columbia Gorge perch. "We affectionately call this butt polish," he says. Imagine no dams, no freeway traffic, no fences, no railroad tracks. Imagine the roar of the free-flowing Columbia River, loud as a freight train as it races through a narrow gorge. Imagine a young Indian sitting on this ledge through seven sunrises and seven sunsets, singing and chanting and running up and down the cliff, waiting for a vision of the spirits that will guide his life.
Concrete tiles are stacked on the roof of a $1 million house atop Cape Horn that is being dismantled by the Friends of the Columbia Gorge Land Trust. Once buildings and asphalt are removed, the Forest Service will buy the property and build a trail leading to one of the gorge's premier overlooks. Daniel Casati, 23, left, of Trout Lake, and Neal Miller, 22, of Hood River, Ore., remove tiles from a roof walkway while a forklift is positioned to lift the roof from its supports. Contractors hope to reuse or recycle 90 percent of the building materials.
