The death of the Valley Journal was just one of the cutbacks implemented by its owner, Colorado Mountain News Media, which like other media companies is reeling from the financial reversals of the newspaper business. The Sopris Sun, now in its fourth month of publication, has set its sights on the local coverage Carbondale missed when the Valley Journal was gone: community activism, upcoming functions, high school sports.
After he was introduced Tuesday as the new publisher of The Gazette, Steve Pope talked about the newspaper industry's troubles and the continued importance of newspapers to their communities. Pope, 59, served as publisher of the Vail Daily newspaper and, since 2005, as general manager of Colorado Mountain News Media, a chain of six daily newspapers and 11 weeklies in Colorado's mountain towns owned by Reno, Nev.-based Swift Communications. The strong local focus of the mountain papers is the key to their success, he said, and something Pope hopes to replicate in Colorado Springs.
LAS VEGAS - The game everyone wanted to discuss at Mountain West media days was the showdown between conference behemoths TCU and Boise State. TCU coach Gary Patterson wanted no part of the chatter. He responded to a question about it by saying the media might be thinking about it, but he will not. Well before TCU goes to Boise, it plays at Air Force on Sept. 10, and that game has him concerned.
Amanda Mountain is the new general manager and station director of KTSC-TV, southern Colorado's public television outlet. Headquartered in Pueblo, the station has long had a low profile in Colorado Springs. Mountain, 34, graduated summa cum laude from the University of Colorado with a degree in media management. She most recently was director of Gazette Charities but has been engaged with the Colorado Springs nonprofit community since 2003, when she became the marketing and community engagement director of the UCCS Visual and Performing Arts department. She has served on half a dozen community boards and raised millions of dollars for local nonprofits. Why did you take the position?

At Mountain West Conference media days last month, commissioner Craig Thompson said member schools had to be smart about spending, especially in tough economic times. Thompson is well aware that building and expanding new practice sites doesn't fit into his message about fiscal responsibility. He said the Mountain West has committed roughly $800 million on facilities the past 11 years.

Gazette publisher and President Steve Pope said Tuesday he will leave the company July 22 to join a Minnesota-based media company. Freedom Communications, the California-based corporate parent of The Gazette, said it will conduct a search to replace Pope, who has served as The Gazette's top executive since early 2009. The publisher oversees all company operations in both digital and print forms, including news reporting, advertising, printing, circulation, marketing and finance.
