In fall 2008, the Colorado Mountain Club published a guidebook that was riddled with typos and 70 years out of date, at a time when online competition has put the future of even the most current printed guidebooks in question. And it charged $185 per copy.

Sometimes you meet people who are so vital and interesting that their age seems completely irrelevant. I mention this because the irrepressible Jane Miller, who is well into her senior years, is such a perfect example of what it means to be an "ageless explorer": curious, involved and eager to seek new challenges. Jane was born in the Yukon to a Canadian mother and English father, but was brought up in Boulder, Colo., where her father was president of Colorado University. She says that she and her brother climbed every mountain and forded every stream and enjoyed an almost idyllic childhood.
Among the many "firsts" she accomplished in her life, Jane was the first Girl Guide for the University of Colorado mountain club.
