County commissioners are upset over letters two Democratic state lawmakers sent to parks officials opposing a motorcycle park proposed for eastern El Paso County. Commissioners say neither Sen. John Morse, D-Colorado Springs, nor state Rep. Mike Merrifield, D-Manitou Springs, contacted them to discuss the park before or after sending letters to Harris Sherman, director of the Colorado Department of Natural Resources, and members of the state Parks Board.

President-elect Barack Obama's choice for interior secretary is receiving widespread praise from environmentalists and politicos. Senate Energy Committee member Ken Salazar, D-Colo., was picked Wednesday to replace Dirk Kempthorne as head of the Interior Department. Salazar's experience includes leading Colorado's Department of Natural Resources.

President Barack Obama on Thursday chose a Colorado natural resources official to be the new agriculture undersecretary in charge of the U.S. Forest Service. Harris Sherman, executive director of the Colorado Department of Natural Resources, will be nominated as undersecretary for natural resources and the environment, Obama said. The post requires Senate confirmation.

Hughes tapped by Colorado Hughes Network Systems LLC of Germantown, a supplier of broadband satellite services, said it was awarded a contract by the Colorado State Parks, a division of the state's Department of Natural Resources, to provide broadband Internet service via Hughes' satellite system to support operations at 15 state park sites. The contract, awarded through the U.S. General Services Administration's Cooperative Purchasing Program, is for a period of one year with two option renewal years.

It's called the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, so one might expect that most of the panel's seven appointed members would have "ties to the industry," as one news report ominously put it. If you created a commission for apple growers, would you name a bunch of orange farmers to sit on it? You might if you're Gov. Bill Ritter. He wants to overhaul the commission (which is actually a part of the Colorado Department of Natural Resources) by expanding it from seven to nine members, while limiting to three the number of commissioners with "ties to industry." It's hoped this will limit the influence of energy companies and broaden the panel's focus. The commission could then be stocked -- or is it "stacked"? -- with representatives of environmental groups, agricultural interest...

The U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service has made available up to $800,000 for projects in Colorado through Conservation Innovation Grants in fiscal year 2007. Individual applications will be awarded up to $75,000 through a statewide competitive grants process for improving conservation practices in Colorado.
