DENVER -- Wind-whipped snow and avalanche danger kept the main highway through the Colorado mountains closed on Monday, stranding thousands of travelers as they headed to New Year's Eve celebrations.
About 35 miles of I-70 remained closed in both directions west of Denver. Officials were waiting for 70-mph gusts to die so they could bring down potential avalanches with explosives before opening the entire route.

AVALANCHE'S HEJDUK OUT TONIGHT: Colorado Avalanche coach Joe Sacco says forward Milan Hejduk will miss Game 6 against the San Jose Sharks with an upper-body injury. Forward Peter Mueller resumed light skating Friday, but Sacco said he's still "doubtful" for the game Saturday night. Mueller hasn't played since taking a hit along the boards against the Sharks on April 4.
Hejduk has been out since colliding with teammate Paul Stastny as they drifted into the Sharks' zone in Sunday's 1-0 overtime win.

DENVER -- With avalanches sweeping away six snow riders on Sunday and killing a skier last week, forecasters fear the weak snow caused by below average snowpack could mean deadly conditions in the coming months for in the Colorado and Utah backcountry.
As of Sunday, 47 people have been caught in backcountry avalanches in Colorado, including the six on Valentine's Day, according to Spencer Logan with the Colorado Avalanche Information Center. None of Sunday's incidents were fatal.

DENVER -- A huge avalanche knocked two cars off a mountain pass Saturday on the main highway to one of the state's largest ski areas, shortly after crowds headed through on the way to the lifts, authorities said.
Eight people were rescued from the buried vehicles and all were taken to area hospitals, said state Patrolman Eric Wynn. Details of their conditions were not available.
