Netcomm Update - Column Rival fast Ethernet standards are contending for acceptance. One is based on CSMA/CD (carrier-sense multiple access/collision detection), Ethernet's access method. The CSMA/CD design, known as 100Base-T, is backed by the Fast Ethernet Alliance, a group of 33 semiconductor, workstation and network equipment companies. The other specification, supported by HP, IBM and AT&T Microelectronics, is known as 100VG-AnyLAN. Both specs operate over unshielded twisted pair (UTP) wiring at 100 Mbps, representing a tenfold increase compared with traditional Ethernet. 100Base-T will be approved as a standard later in 1994. 100VG-AnyLAN products are expected by the second half of the year.

No single standard for local area networks has yet been established, but the development of a number of standards is starting to bring the industry closer together. Xerox claims its Ethernet standard, with an installed base of 20,000 networks and 250 companies making products for it, holds a strong place in the market. Both it and the IEEE Standard 802.3 call for the Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection (CSMA-CD) method for media access when two or more stations share a common bus transmission method. IBM has been pushing its standard for token-passing ring architecture, the IEEE 802.5. One of the most important standards efforts recently undertaken is the Manufacturing Automation Protocol of General Motors. It follows the seven layers of the ISO model and uses communi...

Local area networks (LANs) are increasingly being used for applications requiring greater bandwidths. As a result, a higher native transmission speed is required. Two competing standards have been proposed to the IEEE 802.3 committee for 100M-bps Ethernet. The first proposal, submitted by Hewlett-Packard, is called Demand Priority Access along with the Quartet Signaling physical layer. The second proposal is called CSMA/CD (carrier sense multiple access with collision detection) and is backed by Sun Microsystems, Grand Junction, 3Com Corp and SynOptics. However, CSMA/CD is not isochronous and is therefore unsuitable for full motion video. AT&T Paradyne also has a proposal featuring its carrierless amplitude/phase modulation technology.
Superhero and cartoon characters are integral parts of the electronic entertainment industry. With this in mind, I salute the meld of pop-culture character and video game with a look at Star Wars: Force Unleashed II (from LucasArts, reviewed for PlayStation 3, rated T for teen, $59.99). Darth Vader's apprentice returns from the grave to help usher in the downfall of the Empire in this third-person action game. A single player controls the clone of Starkiller through nine action- packed levels as he searches the galaxy for his beloved Juno Eclipse and helps fuel a rebellion.
