LOUIS - A St. Louis Cardinals team built for offense will now search internally - and perhaps outside the organization - to compensate for the loss of first baseman and three-time National League MVP Albert Pujols after a follow-up examination Monday discovered a minor fracture near his left wrist.
One day after the club voiced cautious optimism that Pujols had escaped serious injury in a fielding collision with Kansas City Royals third baseman Wilson Betemit, a CT scan performed Monday morning found a fracture of the distal tip of the left radius.

PARIS -- The driver of a tractor-trailer truck involved in a fatal 2009 crash in West Paris testified Tuesday that there was nothing else he could have done to prevent the collision that resulted in the death of a Naples man.
Warren Dunning of Dixfield took the stand on the second day of a civil trial against Midwest Price Co. of West Paris, which owned the truck, and Tricia Beretz of Massachusetts, who fell asleep at the wheel and crossed in front of the truck on Route 26.

The owner of Mid Island Collision in Rockville Centre has always had a soft spot for those in need, organizing everything from toy and clothing drives to food giveaways. Since last November Jesberger has contributed nearly $100,000 to various local charities serving veterans, the hungry, people with disabilities and others. This week, Jesberger distributed more than $5,000 worth of food to United Beacon House, which supports veterans in need of food and personal care items. An entire wall of his body shop is filled with news accounts and honors recognizing the company's charitable work. Mid Island is currently sponsoring the latest food drive by Long Island Cares.

A San Bernardino County sheriff's deputy was airlifted to a local hospital Friday after the motorcycle he was riding collided with a vehicle at a Rancho Cucamonga intersection.

EAST HAVEN -- Three people were sent to the hospital -- and one had to be extricated from his car -- following a collision between a car and a dump truck Monday afternoon at Foxon Road and Gay Street, authorities said.
