Of course, community college students face many challenges in getting to graduation, but doing without student aid for which they are eligible shouldn't be one of them. Financial aid offices need to make sure that they are getting the basic facts about financial aid to all students, in a format that they can understand. But we all need to realize how much of a stake we hold in the success of today 's college students: if we don't invest in the wonderful public colleges and universities we have in California - and the financial aid programs which support the students in them - we're jeopardizing our ability to recover from this recession and the future prosperity of our state.

For a vibrant economy, California needs more college graduates than it's currently producing. And turning students away isn't going to meet work-force demands.
That's a practical reason for the law allowing some non- residents, including some illegal immigrants, to pay lower, in- state tuition rates at California's colleges and universities. To qualify, they must complete three years of high school in California and, in the case of illegal immigrants, sign an affidavit pledging to apply for legal residence in the United States.

Dr. Nanette Reynolds, president of The Imagine Fund, said the primary objective of the organization is to help ensure that Michigan's public colleges and universities do not suffer the same fate as California's in the aftermath of Prop 209, which, like Michigan's Prop 2, banned affirmative action in public institutions.
As our state and citizens continue to struggle to compete, it is imperative that all efforts are made to introduce our future leaders to a diverse educational environment," she said. "The Imagine Fund sees itself as a catalyst for ensuring that this process occurs.
"For nearly my entire career I have been teaching the importance of effective communication skills," she said. "With most Michigan students living and growing up in profound racial segregation and seldom int...
