College head to retire
Mary Pat Seurkamp, the 11th president of the College of Notre Dame of Maryland, announced that she will retire at the end of the 2011-2012 academic year, her 15th year as president of the Baltimore- based Roman Catholic liberal arts college. U.S. District Court Judge Irene Keeler, a trustee and graduate of the college, has been selected to chair a Presidential Search Committee, aided by Academic Search Inc., a Washington, D.C., firm that specializes in finding executives for institutions of higher education. College officials said plans are to name Seurkamp's successor in the spring of 2012, and for that person to begin serving in July 2012.

The Maryland Department of the Environment awarded Quentin Forrest of the Science Services Administration the Employee of the Year Award. Forrest was recognized for his work on the technical development of a new field GIS system and database. He joined MDE in 1999 as a toxicologist.

Cardiologist Elijah Saunders, professor of medicine and head of the Section of Hypertension at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, has received the 2011 Herbert W. Nickens Award from the Association of American Medical Colleges for promoting justice in medical education and health care equality. Dr. Saunders is an expert on hypertension in African-Americans who has worked to raise awareness of high blood pressure and explored treatment options for African-Americans. He has devoted his career to developing programs to reach patients in non-traditional settings to educate at-risk patients about the importance of cardiovascular health.
