MILWAUKEE - Mention Amazon to the incoming class of college freshmen and they are more likely to think of shopping than the South American river. PC doesn't stand for political correctness, and breaking up on Facebook is more common than any more personal encounter. These are among the 75 references on this year's Beloit College Mindset List, a compilation intended to remind teachers that college freshmen born mostly in 1993 see the world in a much different way: They fancied pogs and Tickle Me Elmo toys as children, watched televisions that never had dials, and their lives have always been like a box of chocolates.
Abstinence sexuality education (sex ed) is the only federally funded sex ed in the United States. The strict curriculum of this education does not educate American adolescents about safer sex practices and leaves a knowledge gap in these adolescents that follows them into college. THE PROBLEM: This project aimed to identify sex knowledge differences between freshmen and senior undergraduate students at a northeast private university. METHODS: The Acquisition of Sexual Information Test was taken anonymously online (MonkeySurvey.com) by freshmen and seniors at the selected university. The test covered the four areas of human sexuality: 1) venereal disease; 2) birth control, sexual relations, and reproduction; 3) male biological aspects of sexuality; and 4) female biological aspects of sex...
College freshmen's emotional health hit an all-time low this academic year, reflecting the stress of wanting to succeed and the cost of acquiring a quality education during a struggling economy, a report from UCLA's Higher Education Research Institute says. In the survey of more than 200,000 first-time freshmen at 279 colleges and universities, only 52 percent rated their emotional health high or above average, a drop from 64 percent in 1985 and down 3.4 percent from 2009.
Dear Cindy, Soon I am leaving for college and am constantly hearing about how students always gain weight the first year. I've been active and played sports in high school but won't be playing in college, which is why I am writing you. My weight is pretty good, but I am worried that I will gain, as some of my friends say. Any ideas that will help me? - Sheena

This year's class of U.S. college freshmen is reporting record- low levels of emotional health, with more students saying they frequently felt overwhelmed by work as high school seniors, according to an annual survey being released today. Yet the new students generally expressed positive attitudes toward higher education, even as they struggle to finance it. More students than ever - about 73 percent - believe it will help their earning power, researchers at the University of California in Los Angeles found.
Freshmen are preparing for their first semester of college, which begins for many today, but you might be surprised at how unprepared some really are. Their math, writing and critical-thinking skills are poor.
SAN JOSE, Calif. - On 21st-century American campuses, is there room for Shakespeare, Sartre and Sondheim? A declining number of students think so - a trend that worries leaders at many top universities, where engineers often outnumber humanists.
