BOGOTA, Colombia, May 24, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Minister of Social Protection in Colombia has fined Sodexo $2,678,000 pesos ($1,425.00 US Dollars) each day they refuse to negotiate with Sinaltrainal and ordered Sodexo to "start direct talks with trade union organization National Union of Agro-System SINALTRAINAL without delay." Sodexo workers in Colombia have been trying to form a union to bargain higher wages, payment for overtime and other benefits for more than a year. Working conditions in Colombia for Sodexo workers at remote sites like the Carbones de la Jagua Mine can be grim. According to a report put out by TransAfrica Forum, a human rights organization in the United States, workers there report that they frequently work 16 hours or more without overtime pay to wh...
COLLECTIVE BARGAINING AGREEMENT; UNION; WRONGFUL DISCHARGE; WHISTLEBLOWER
America's favorite sport is still in business - for another day. The NFL and players' union agreed to a 24-hour extension of the current collective bargaining agreement so negotiations can continue.
The pending case, 14 Penn Plaza LLC v. Pyett, has important implications in the field of labor and employment law, and for those who practice in the area. The Supreme Court observed that Alexander v. Gardner-Denver involved a labor arbitration dispute under a collective bargaining agreement, not a non-union arbitration arising under the FAA. As in Pyett, if the union declines to handle the case, the employer argues that the arbitration option can be extended to the affected individual, who can hire a private attorney to take the case forward to arbitration. Plaintiffs reinforce their argument by reference to the special rule for individual waivers under federal age discrimination law, and to the right to jury trial protected by statute. The National Labor Relations Board has expressed a...
The NBA season is over and now basketball fans can take a break from rooting for ABL (anybody but LeBron) in the playoffs. As for the 29 teams that aren't hoisting a championship trophy, you would think they're cooling their heels ahead of the expected lapse of the collective bargaining agreement with the players' union, which expires June 30. Without an extension or new deal in place, the free agent period that starts July 1 will be quiet, meaning teams can't conduct negotiations with players on the market.
Collective bargaining has received a fair share of media attention recently. Several states have proposed limiting public employee collective bargaining rights. The National Basketball Association has locked out its players until a new collective bargaining agreement is reached with the players union. Striking Verizon employees have agreed to return to work while contract negotiations continue. The National Football League owners and players ratified a collective bargaining agreement to avoid a lockout earlier this month. There are many sources of information available to the collective bargaining researcher. Resources range from introduction to collective bargaining fundamentals to in-depth analysis of specific collective bargaining agreements. The following is a selection of resources...
XENIA -- A day after the district avoided a union strike, the Xenia Community Schools Board of Education approved a revised collective bargaining agreement with its support union on Thursday night. The board voted to adopt the slightly amended contract with the Xenia Education Support Professionals, who voted at the 11th hour Wednesday night to call off a planned midnight strike.
Collective bargaining agreement, union, teachers, reduction in force, reasonable, discretion, limited contract.
HOUSTON -- Neil Walker was 8 years old in 1994, when his hometown Pirates left the National League East and moved into the Central Division. He's too young to have memories of the club's epic battles against the Phillies and Mets in the 1970s, '80's and early '90's. The Pirates again could change divisions -- or, perhaps, even leagues -- if baseball realigns. The topic will be part of Collective Bargaining Agreement talks between major-league owners and the players' union.
