Advocates Call For New Restrictions On Debt Buying & Other Safeguards to Protect Consumers
WASHINGTON, March 21, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A new report issued by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) today found that the agency received more complaints from consumers about debt collection than any other single industry. The report shows that current law fails to address rampant debt collection abuses and leaves consumers vulnerable to being harassed for unsubstantiated debt, according to Consumers Union, the nonprofit publisher of Consumer Reports.

A state agency lacked the authority to investigate a law firm for alleged violations of state consumer protection law, the Georgia Supreme Court has ruled in affirming judgment.
The law firm is in the business of debt collection. The state's consumer affairs agency received complaints that the firm engaged in abusive collection practices.

The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) is announcing an opportunity for public comment on the proposed collection of certain information by the agency. Under the Paperwork Reduction Act (PRA) of 1995, Federal agencies are required to publish notice in the Federal Register concerning each proposed collection of information, including each revision of a previously approved collection, and allow 60 days for public comment in response to the notice. This notice solicits comments on information needed to identify problems or complaints in VA's health care services.

Madison State auditors will review the Department of Revenue's collection of sales tax in response to complaints from counties and others that the agency has not been giving them their due.
They will file a preliminary report on the matter by the end of the year. The Legislature's Joint Audit Committee later will decide whether to order a full-blown audit of sales tax collections, said Sen. Carol Roessler (R-Oshkosh), the committee co-chairwoman.

Identity Theft Tops the List Again
WASHINGTON, March 8, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Federal Trade Commission today released the list of top consumer complaints received by the agency in 2010. The list showed that for the 11th year in a row, identity theft was the number one consumer complaint category. Of 1,339,265 complaints received in 2010, 250,854 - or 19 percent - were related to identity theft. Debt collection complaints were in second place, with 144,159 complaints.

For the 11th year in a row, identity theft was the most frequent consumer complaint received by the Federal Trade Commission, according to the latest data released by the agency.
The more than 250,000 identify theft reports received by the agency in 2010 constituted 19 percent of all consumer complaints, according to the data. The second highest complaint - debt collection - constituted 11 percent of all complaints, with more than 144,000 reports.
