  • They used different tactics, depending on the community setting and the nature of the group," [Ward Churchill] explained. "In many instances, they didn't actually pull the trigger, but the agents picked the targets and abetted the various hit squads. There was always a certain amount of paranoia dispensed by the FBI," Churchill said, "which they hoped would have a self-neutralizing effect on activists in the movement." As part of bis closing remarks, Churchill, whose faculty status is in court following his controversial comments that the people killed during 9/11 were "little Eichmanns," said that he will never disavow waging the struggle. More alarmingly, he said the Obama administration is worse than the Bush administration. He didn't get a chance to elaborate on that, but one of t...

  • The Bush-Cheney war on terrorism, with its boundless Orwellian timeframe, warrantless searches, and wiretapping programs that epitomized its extra-constitutional prosecution, has been deemphasized by the Obama administration, but it nonetheless supports renewing three provisions of the Patriot Act due to expire at the end of 2009, despite objections from liberal and conservative groups regarding excessive governmental authoritytointrudeintoAmericans'privatelives. The Ameri can Civil Liberties Union, which opposes extension, characterized the administration's position as "a mixed bag," and hopes the next version of the Patriot Act will contain important safeguards concerning the collecting of international communications and specifically bar surveillance of protected First Amendment activ...

  • -Ethiopia defeats Italy at the Battle of Adowa (also called Adwa). It was one of the few successful military victories of Africans over Europeans as the latter attempted to colonize and economically exploit the African continent. The nominal head of the Ethiopian forces was Emperor Menelik II but the lead general was Ras Makonnen-father of the man who would become next Emperor Haile Selassie. Pictured left: Ras Makonnen with his young son, Ras Tafari (later Haile Selassie). The battle which began on March 1, 1896 would leave 6,000 Italians and 10,000 Ethiopians dead. But the victory forced Europe to recognize Ethiopia as an independent and sovereign nation as well as give inspiration to Blacks worldwide who were fighting for freedom. -The infamous COINTELPRO memorandum is sent t...

  • -A date considered by many to mark the beginning of the great "Exodus of 1879" when thousands of Blacks began fleeing racism, violence and economic exploitation in the South for new lives in the Midwest, especially Kansas. One of the most prominent organizers of the exodus was former Tennessee slave Benjamin "Pap" Singleton. An estimated 20,000 Blacks took part in the exodus. They were driven in part by the Homestead Act which promised free land. But by 1880, efforts had already begun to curtail the movement of Blacks to the Midwest. In 1881, Pap Singleton was hauled before a Senate investigative committee looking into his role in the exodus. -Actress Hattie McDaniel becomes the first African-American to win an Oscar. • Rev. Lee knew very well that the leadership of the SCLC, comprised mostly of Black Southern ministers, was not in support of gay marriage, as did his White gay supporters. In Lee's defense, it would have been organizational suicide to not support gay marriage. While I don't necessarily agree with all of Rev. Lee's tactics over the past year as it relates to the issue of gay marriage and Proposition 8, California's gay marriage ban, that has seen [Eric Lee] become the Black poster child for White gays in California, I will say that he knows art of survival. This is Los Angeles, not the Deep South and the White gays here have very cunningly all but made it mandatory that Black civil rights groups embrace gay marriage, lest their funding be jeopardized and they find themselves on the front...
