Recently, I was trying to catch up on the Federal Reserve Board's latest activities intended to implement the Mortgage Disclosure Improvement Act. This act was passed by Congress in 2008 in the aftermath of the mortgage-industry meltdown. It amended the Truth In Lending Act to require even more disclosures by lenders concerning the terms of their loans on the theory that, if borrowers had more information about variable interest rates, negative amortization, prepayment penalties, etc., they would be less likely to destroy the world economy. At some point in this exercise, I found myself saying: "Boy, the Truth in Lending Act is starting to rival the Internal Revenue Code and Hammurabi's Code as the world's most convoluted statute." Then it dawned on me that I didn't actually know anythi...

This paper contrasts four distinct versions of the Prisoner's Dilemma (the commons, public goods, biological altruism, and biological selfishness) in terms of their ethical content for economic decision making. An argument is made for the restoration of Tucker's third player - as given in the original specification of the game - in order to judge whether a resolution is desirable in economic and business situations that reduce to the Prisoner's Dilemma. Finally, the use of tit-for-tat as a 'solution' to the Prisoner's Dilemma is compared with the practice of business ethics.

Central to the kaleidoscope perspective of entrepreneurial careers is the idea of balance. Part of this balance is managing the tension between the risks inherent in the entrepreneurial effort and the need to financially protect the entrepreneur's family and other obligations. States can help entrepreneurs manage this tension by exempting certain property from bankruptcy thereby offering these economic actors some financial protection should the effort fail. Several recent studies have identified a link between these exemptions to federal bankruptcy law and rates of entrepreneurship. These studies presume, however, that the state exemptions provide a level of wealth insurance should the entrepreneurial effort fail and that this is factored into the decision to start a new venture.
