Dear Tom and Ray: I do not have an air conditioner. "So what?" you say. "There are many cars on the streets without any air conditioning, most of them old, rusted-out beaters." But I have a 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, base model XFE. My boss bought it for me because he couldn't pass up a $6,000 brand-new car. So now I am driving hell on wheels ... literally. It would be one thing if I lived in Alaska or Siberia. But I'm in the middle of the country, where temperatures were regularly 95 this past summer. When it comes to small cars for 2011, electricity is the big news. // It starts when the Nissan Leaf falls into local dealerships in April. The Leaf is an electric-powered car with a range of 100 miles. After that, it must be plugged in to be recharged. // Chevrolet's big news is the arrival of the Volt, a range-extended electric vehicle. But it could be another year until we see one in Hampton Roads. Initially, sales will be limited to New York , Michigan, California, Washington and Austin. The Volt is propelled by an electric motor and a battery pack with a 40-mile range. Beyond that, a gasoline engine kicks in to recharge the battery pack. The car also can be recharged by plugging it in, but unlike the Leaf - and despite its name - it still burns gasoline.
