The children's book "Thanks to the Animals," written by Passamaquoddy storyteller Allen Sockabasin, tells of Zoo Sap, an infant who falls off his family's sled during the journey from their coastal summer home to the deep woods. Though his family doesn't notice, the animals in the snowy woods soon hear his cries and cover him to protect the boy until his father returns.
It's a sweet story, and the watercolor illustrations by Rebekah Raye of East Blue Hill are a beautiful foil to the text. For Sockabasin, however, the most intriguing part of "Thanks to the Animals" (Tilbury House, $16.95) is a half-page at the end of the book that lists the names of each animal in the Passamaquoddy language.

When Derrell Satterfield was offered the opportunity to leave Milwaukee for a summer job in Martha's Vineyard, the 18-year-old jumped at the chance looking at it not only as a way to make money, but also as a means out of his circumstances.
Right now, I don't have anything looking up for me," Satterfield said as he embarked upon his journey to the coastal Massachusetts island in June. "I want a new life. There are a lot of things that go on (in Milwaukee) that I don't like. I have relatives who are on drugs. Most of them have been in prison. I don't want to be around here.

The ancient Greek verb anabasis may be literally translated as the "ascent," the march "upland" from the low-lying coastal area near the eastern Mediterranean to the dry plateaus of central Mesopotamia, the journey embarked upon by a Greek mercenary army recruited by Prince Cyrus of Persia who planned to wrest the imperial throne from his elder brother, Artaxerxes. From a strictly military point of view, one minor glitch, the translation of the hoplite 's cutting weapon as "saber" may be confusing to the reader who associates this term with the classic curved 19th-century cavalry sword.

The last ferry left for the mainland and coastal residents hunkered down at home as Hurricane Earl closed in with 105 mph winds Thursday on North Carolina's dangerously exposed Outer Banks, the first and perhaps most destructive stop on the storm's projected journey up the Eastern Seaboard.
The hurricane's squalls began to lash the long ribbon of barrier islands Thursday night. Gusts above 40 mph made signs shake and the heavy rain fall sideways in Buxton, the southeasternmost tip of the Outer Banks.
