Allstate Insurance Co.'s decision to stop writing new homeowners policies in Maryland's coastal regions is legal, but lawmakers should look more closely at the subject, according to the Maryland Insurance Administration.
The state's insurance regulator on Monday released an opinion finding that Allstate had shown, as state law requires, that its moratorium on new policies in the areas of the state most vulnerable to hurricane damage was "not arbitrary, capricious, unfair or discriminatory.

Every workday, hundreds of thousands Riverside and San Bernardino county residents commute to work in the coastal economies of Los Angeles, San Diego, and Orange counties, according to a recent study conducted for UC Riverside's School of Business Administration by Beacon Economics. Businesses in these coastal economies are externally oriented, meaning they produce goods and services sold across the United States and the globe, ultimately supporting all of Southern California.
As the Riverside/San Bernardino region looks ahead from the current economic malaise, local policy makers need to recognize that inland Southern California has the capacity - and critical need - to expand its own externally oriented job sector and grow beyond its bedroom community roots.

NMFS is closing the commercial fishery for non-sandbar large coastal sharks (LCS) in the Atlantic region. This action is necessary under existing regulations because landings in this fishery have exceeded 80 percent of the available quota.
