WASHINGTON, July 1 /U.S. Newswire/ -- In a significant victory Tuesday, the union representing many of the nation's Coast Guard workers, the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), convinced the Coast Guard to ensure that only federal employees, not private contractors, should perform certain functions for the Coast Guard. Dozens of dedicated Coast Guard employees located in West Virginia decide whether or not to grant U.S. citizenship to ships and boats. The Coast Guard decided last year that these jobs could be contracted out," said John Gage, AFGE National President.

They recognize there is room for improvement, and they try to do so, using objective measures of performance.
