The U.S. Coast Guard's motto is Semper paratus -- always ready - and its New River auxiliary is working hard with that in mind.
Members of the auxiliary's Flotilla 83 have put in more than 4,000 hours over the past two years refitting the Pump Station off Lyons Road into its Search and Rescue Detachment headquarters at the lake.

Okauchee Lake resident Harvey Randall was reading a favorite boating magazine one day when a story about the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary caught his eye. He was surprised to learn that the auxiliary, established in 1939, was an all-volunteer organization with nearly 30,000 members dedicated to promoting boating safety.

WHITTIER - Harry Jacobs, a 30-year member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, was elected this month as district commodore of the 11th Coast Guard District Southern Region.
Jacobs, who joined the Coast Guard Auxiliary in July 1980, and is currently serving as district chief of staff, was one of two candidates for this office.

BAR HARBOR - The Coast Guard Auxiliary is offering a course on boating and seamanship that may help participants reduce their boat insurance and present an opportunity to become a Coast Guard Auxiliary member. The fee for the course is $50. The course will last 13 weeks with the first class 7-9 p.m. Jan. 20.
The Weekend Navigator course also is being offered by the Coast Guard Auxiliary. In this course participants will learn the three basic steps of navigation: pre-voyage planning, navigation underway, and confirming plans through independent means.

CENTERVILLE -- The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is looking for a few good men and women.
The Auxiliary, which is the volunteer wing of the U.S. Coast Guard, has plenty of boats, said Loren Gannon, spokesman for Division 6 of the Auxiliary, but doesn't have enough people to put in them.
