Nearly 50 years ago, the ceiling of a Levitz furniture warehouse came crashing down. FWS Home Furniture seized the opportunity -- buying 115 truckloads of the former industry giant's displaced merchandise -- and a Buffalo landmark discount warehouse retailer was born. Over the years, FWS moved toward a more mainstream business model, buying furniture and floor coverings at trade shows and through standard merchant channels rather than catching overstocks and canceled orders at fire sales.
Big's Bedrooms, the Paramus furniture store that closed in December, angering customers who paid for undelivered bedroom sets, plans to ask a bankruptcy court to allow it to hold a going-out-of- business sale to liquidate assets. If the court approves the request at a hearing Monday, the Paramus store and a second location in Yonkers, N.Y., probably will reopen in early February, said attorney Daniel Stolz, who is representing Big's in its bankruptcy filing. However, customers with undelivered orders won't be able to get their merchandise when the stores reopen, Stolz said. They will have to file a claim with the bankruptcy court and wait in line with the rest of the creditors.

The longtime owners of closeout furniture retailer FWS Home Furnishings have sold the popular business to its general manager and a veteran furniture executive, who say they plan to grow the business. John Wanat of Amherst and Lockport's John Grimaldi bought FWS last week from Jim Nisbet and Richard Zakalik, who had owned the firm together for 17 years. Officials would not disclose the price. The deal closed last week but was not announced until Tuesday.
People picking up furniture they bought during closeout sales and an auction at Boll Furniture got an unpleasant surprise from the city on their vehicles' windshields. All day long Wednesday, dozens of customers' vehicles were lined up around the block.
Failure isn't in Steve Seacat's vocabulary. In 2000, Seacat, who is from the area, opened the first As Is Outlet in Daytona Beach, Fla., after two of his previous establishments went out of business. Seven years later, As Is expanded to five stores and opened its sixth in Colonial Heights two months ago. As Is Outlet, located at 1823 Southpark Blvd., in the old Circuit City building, is a closeout store for interior and lawn furniture, clothes and home decor. They pride themselves with having a fun working environment and treating customers like family. The store itself may be a little cluttered but, they say, but there are definitely bargains to be found.
A dirty front door, bland paint job or cluttered closets could be one of the reasons your house is still on the market. Diana Leakas said staging a home can make it more appealing to potential buyers.

Bob Stone models his longtime retail concept after national wholesale clubs, but there is a difference -- no membership fees are required. Stone, who owns Martinsville-based Stone & Co., brought his wholesale discount retail business to Roanoke in late March. His initial plan is to keep the store here through June, though ultimately, he'd like to stay through the fall, if not longer.
